Gorgon City - Branding

Gorgon City - Branding

I am researching the way artists in my genre use branding as part of their marketing. This will be useful to me when it comes to creating my digipack as I will be able to see how branding is done professionally and successfully. I will draw inspiration from the branding research and this will allow me to create something that will appeal to my target audience of young men and women between 18 - 25.

The DJ pair's logo came from this typography style on their DJ sets.

The design and shapes included in the bridge behind the artists is similar to the shapes included in their logo.

Their logo is repeated and sign in everything they do which allows it to be instantly recognisable to the public.

This is the single cover for Ready For Your Love by Gorgon City featuring MNEK. The typography used on this cover is different to the style of text on the banner for their DJ set. This style is more sophisticated and slick which will appeal to the target audience. The Gorgon City logo is the largest thing on the cover so it draws the customers eyes to it which is an important part of the branding. The colours on the cover are orange and purple and is supposed to replicate a sun setting. Orange is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics this matched with the palm trees gives the cover the 'summer vibes' that the song has brought this year. Purple connotes romance which links to the lyrics of the song; this makes the cover more relevant to the song. However the video does not match the cover of the single pack.

The video is mainly shot in dark places which contrasts with the bright single cover. Gorgon City's logo only featured at the very end of the music video for Ready For Your Love.

Although Gorgon City's logo appears at the end of the video to end it, in my opinion their should be more examples of the logo seen within the video itself.

However, at several points in the music video there are shots similar to this, featuring this wall piece. The face in the carving is similar to what appears on the cover of Gorgon City's single Imagination. This could be branding and advertising for the next single.

Broken computer

I am having troubles with my computer as whenever I click in something it just says not responding so I can't finish my posts and video I was making. It does this sometimes and starts to work after I leave it to cool down for a few hours. Hopefully I will get at least one more post up by the end of the night.

Music Video Pitch

Music Video Pitch
When presenting my pitch to the group I was very nervous as I had multiple issues in getting the presentation right such as the video (made on MovieMaker) refusing to save as files were currupt, I then tried filming the video using a camera of the computer screen so that my hard work would not go to waste... however the video would not play on the school server, also prezi stopped working so I re-started my presentation on power point. I currently have the flu so I sound and look ill which isn't ideal when presenting infront of people. It seems things are never easy these days.
Here is my pitch:
Here are the slides that featured in my presentation:

I have chosen dance music as my genre as dance has become increasingly popular over the last few years. There is a huge demand for dance music and more and more artists are collaborating with DJ’s. This week the number 1 and number 2 spots are taken up by dance tracks.

I have chosen one of the most popular songs of 2014 : Clarity by Zedd featuring Foxes. The track charted at number 1 in the UK and reached number 2 in the US Billboard Top 40.The song also won a Grammy for best dance recording earlier this year

To star in my music video I have chosen Callum Lincoln to be the DJ – Marc Atlanta and I have chosen Charlotte Greaves to star as the female vocalist – Keira Black. I made the conscious decision to chose two people with a strong friendship. They are best friends but fight like cat and dog so they were perfect. They both fit the image I was looking for too.

The people who inspired the ‘look’ of ‘Marc Atlanta’ are Ashton Irwin, Joe Sugg and Luke Hemmings to name a couple. I chose this style because it suits his character as he is laid back and cool.

The style icons who inspired Keira Black’s look are Kylie Jenner, Rihanna and Vanessa Hudgens. I chose this edgy-er style as it does not represent a damsel in distress Keira Black is confident and and stand up for herself.

The music videos I was most inspired by when brainstorming ideas for my music video were We Found Love, Sweet Nothing, Clarity, Unmissable and Changing. Each of these songs are dance tracks which feature a lead female vocalist apart from Unmissable by gorgon city and have been released in the past 5 years.

For my music video, the main idea behind it is a passionate ‘love/hate’ relationship. The video features the two artists Marc Atlanta and Keira Black. Throughout the video the footage cuts between narrative that shows how in love and the amount of chemistry between the two and then the arguments between the two strong characters. I have created a mood board of the videos that inspired my storyline and edited them to give a general idea of how I imagine my video to be. Within the video I would like to incorporate narrative, performance and landscape shots to really tie my video together.

I plan to continue my loation scouting within the next few weeks and to potentially do some trial shooting in the locations.

Due to the storyline of the video where there are ups and downs, good days and bad days, it allows people who have had similar experiences to connect with the video. Using two young artists allows a younger target audience to enjoy the video. The way the two characters will be dressed is more associated with a younger audience as it is not sophisticated its more casual and youthful which reflects what teenagers wear today. The main target audience for my music video would be 18 – 25 as it shows a passionate relationship which a younger audience would not be able to necessarily relate to however, it is not exactly marriage material so the target audience remains young. Both a male and female audience would find the music video appealing as I have chosen two good looking actors to  play the role of the couple.

I have begun to think about my Digipak. And what I’d like the image of my artists to be. I liked different parts of each of these examples. I liked the unusual filter used here for a cover of sweet nothing. I would like to use something similar as the red connotes the danger and love they show within the video.  I like the typography across the middle of the screen as your eye is draw straight to it and that is good for the artist. For this cover of break free I like the fading out of the image as it contradicts but links with the title clarity.  I liked the idea of having a recognisable logo for the artist which is seen here on these two covers. Similarly to the break free cover I like the blurry background as I think that it suits the song title.

Here is a simple design idea for a front cover of a digipack. I plan to feature the artist on the cover as the main focus of the cover. Inside the digipack I would like to include high quality images of the location I will shot in and the artist themselves.

Titanium - David Guetta ft. Sia Analysis

Titanium - David Guetta ft. Sia Analysis

I have chosen to analyse David Guetta's song Titanium as the video includes a interesting storyline. The song features the beautiful vocals of Sia. This song was released in 2011 and reached the number one spot in the UK.

Using a close up shot here brings the audience immediately to the centre of the scene. As the boy is using his arms to protect himself signifies that the character is vulnerable.
The opening shots are all close ups. The shots show a boy in a brace position, he is surrounded by rubble which suggests that there was an explosion of some type here. This shows that the boy is in danger.

This extreme long shot shows that the boy is in school. The location shows that there has been an explosion and as the boy is alone it represents the way he feels. The scene connotes how isolated he feels the and the explosion represents how confused he feels.

The facial expression of the woman in the mid shot and mid close up shows there is a reason to be afraid of the boy and it suggests to the audience that he is the reason behind the explosion in the school. This adds a bit of suspense to the video and leaves the audience wondering why the woman is so scared of him. The clothing she is wearing is yellow which is associated with intellect but also caution. She is concerned about her safety and the safety of others within the school due to this one boy.

The boy pulls on a red hat and the colour red is associated with danger, strength, anger and power. As he is pulling the hat over his head it shows that the anger and power takes over his head and he can't control his actions which result in a disaster. The corridor he is travelling down is dark representing the dark path he is taking as he is letting his supernatural powers get the better of him and is now being seen as deviant.

As the boy runs away a police car pulls up and the teacher who was scared of the boy runs out and points the officer in the direction that the boy headed. This shows that the boy has done something wrong and that he is a threat to society. The facial expression of the police officer shows something shocking and confusing.

The next shots show the boy cycling away at an extremely fast speed. The audience gets an idea that maybe something supernatural is occurring. The boy is determined to get away from the disaster that occurred at the school. The accelerating speed of the bike and fast paced editing between different camera angles of the bike matches the tempo of the song at that particular point. Using a range of camera angles to capture this particular scene such as extreme long shots, close ups and mid shots brings the audience up to speed with the boy, allows the video to track the boy along his journey whilst keeping the editing at a fast pace.

As the pace of the song slows so does the speed of the editing and the motion on screen. These shots show two women running, this represents the normal/average area where it is safe. The mid close up of the two women jogging represent the struggles of society and the boy just rides past, totally relaxed and calm which signify that the struggles they have do not effect him.

The boy returns to his house which is captured through an establishing shot. The house is painted white and is a normal suburban property. White connotes goodness and innocence which suggests that what the boy has done was to protect himself not to intentionally hurt anyone. The boy enters the property to see a news report about a 'supernatural occurrence at local school' which confirms what is actually happening in the music video to the audience. It is clear that now the boy is under threat from the police.

These shots show the boy packing his bag as if he is running away to protect himself from the police and the judgemental people around him.

The shots of the shadows through the window are an effective way to built suspense and put the audience on edge.  The low angle shot of the boy gives the character authority and power and signifies to the audience that the boy is stronger and and more powerful than the police.

The boy runs to the door and realises he cannot get out. This increases the tension as the audience feel as if they are trapped too. This represents how the boy feels within the town because he is different. He can see the keys but he is under pressure just as he is under pressure to fit in and be 'normal'.

The police break down the door and enter the property this shows that the boy is being treated like a criminal as they police do not understand the circumstance. They point their guns searching for the boy which signifies that he is a serious threat in their eyes.

Here the audience see the boy using his supernatural powers to pick up the keys. This connotes that he uses  his 'powers' to get out of difficult situations.

Although the police have guns and search the house to find the boy however once the officer sees the bears flying he looks concerned and scared which shows that the boy threatens the officers. The use of supernatural powers in the video will attract sci-fi fans. This sets the target as men aged 25-40.

The boy then begins to walk through the woods. The trees are leafless because the video is set in the Autumn. The leafless trees and an eary feel which would appeal to the target audience as it adds tension. It makes the boy appear to be more isolated from society. The weather looks cold which represents the reception he gets from the people around him; bitter and cold.

This shot shows the sun setting which shows things are getting worse as soon it will be dark and any comfort found from the light will be gone. The darkness brought by the nighttime connotes evil and misery.

This part of the video is more fast paced as the boy runs through the woods as police chase him. At first you don't see the police themselves but their torches. The bright lights through the trees give a sci-fi effect.

These shots show a very aggressive officer holding large gun. This is an unusual scene as you would not expect to see this being aimed at a child. The boy appears to be scared and is represented as innocent and the officer is the one in the wrong. The facial expression of the officer captured as a mid-close up shows the officer is afraid and angry. This suggests that the character can be slightly trigger happy.

As the armed officers surround the boy, aiming their  guns at him, the boy curls up into a brace position. This shows him seeking protection and safety as he is vulnerable and at serious risk. The boy is scared as he is being threatened by several officerswith guns. This extreme long shot shows the boy beginning to glow, signifying to the audience that a build up of strong emotion causes to boy to react uncontrollable using his supernatural ability.
