Collecting Audience Feedback for my Media Products

Collecting Audience Feedback for my Media Products

I have created a survey to collect data to find out how well my media products work together as a whole. This will help me with evaluation questions 2 and 3. I hope to find where I have done well and where I could have improved. This information will be very useful to me. I created the survey using www.SurveyMonkey.com. I will email out the link to the survey along side the link to my music video and I will attach the images of my advert and Digipak.

Here is the survey:

Digipak Advert Final Design

Digipak Advert Final Design

Here is the final design of my Digipak advert for Clarity. I liked this design as its sleek and simple and lets the audience know all the information they need. I used the same image on the advert as I used for the front cover of my Digipak. This will help the audience recognise the album when they go to buy it. The font used for the artist's typography (Freestyle Script)  and the font used for the title of the album is the same as the Digipak this will also help the audience associate this with the album when they go to buy it. I included ratings from Heat Magazine as they recently reviews Taylor Swifts album 1989 which was an influential artist I looked at when creating my artist Keira Black. I also included a review by Spin Magazine which is  a dance music magazine who often feature artists such as David Guetta who were inspiring in terms of the dance music side of my Digipak. The large text and style of the main body of text was inspired by the advert for Calvin Harris' album Motion. I included the other forms of media that the album is available on. This would appeal to my younger target audience as that demographic usually purchase their music online or stream it. I included artists Keira Black has collaborated with to draw in a wider audience who may not have been previously interested in the album.

Digipak Reviews by Heat Magazine and Spin Magazine

Digipak Reviews by Heat Magazine and Spin Magazine

I have chosen to include reviews of Keira Blacks Digipak on the advert. This would increase the sales of the Digipak as I have chosen two well known magazines to review the album and readers of these magazines and people who see that the Digipak has received a good star rating would be more likely to pick up the album and give it a listen when they may not have before. I chose to include a star rating by Heat Magazine as this would appeal to the target audience of teenage girls as they will most likely read gossip magazine such as this. I also chose to use Heat as a reviewer as they gave Taylor Swifts album 1989 a five star review back in October 2014 and as Taylor Swift inspired Keira Black I thought it would be a good idea to include this rating as part of my advert.

I also included a review by Spin. Spin magazine has interviewed and reviewed some of the worlds biggest DJs and producers and female vocalists who inspired my artists such as David Guetta, Skrillex and Florence Welch so this magazine was a perfect choice for a reviewer for Keira Blacks Digipak.

I chose to give Keira Blacks album 5 stars from Heat Magazine and a 4 star review from Spin Magazine.

Advert Design Experiments

I have been designing a few different variations of design ideas for the advert to promote my Digipak. Here are a couple of designs I have completed so far:

These design ideas were inspired by Calvin Harris' advert for his most recent album 'Motion'.

Digipak - Complete

Digipak - Complete

I have now completed my Digipak. I am quite pleased with it as I believe it works well with my genre of music which is a female solo singer and dance music.

Credit Block

Credit Block

It was suggested by Sir that I add a credit block at the beginning of my music video. This is uses to identify the name of the song, album, artist(s) and the record company. Here is the credit block at the beginning of my music video:

Clarity Music Video - Final Cut

Clarity Music Video - Final Cut

Finally, I am posting my final cut of my music video! After months of constant editing and filming I am so pleased to finally be able to create this blog post. My music video is about two couples who are equally in love however one couple represent the everyday life of your average young couple whereas the other is more intense and an often violent love hate relationship. When I completed my research earlier in the year I found that most people would prefer for the music video narrative to include the artist performing, a love story and for the video to address an issue such as domestic violence. I followed this feedback from my audience when creating my music video for Clarity.

Here is my final cut:

From 'Marc' to 'Mark'

From 'Marc' to 'Mark'

I have decided to change the spelling of the DJ/Producer. It was previously 'Marc Atlanta' however I have now made the decision to change it to 'Mark Atlanta'. This is the more usual spelling so the public may feel they can connect to the artist more.

Record Company

Record Company/ Label

For my Digipak I need to feature a tribute to my artists record company on the back and throughout the Digipak. I would also like the name of the record company to feature at the end of my music video just like at the end of Zedd's music videos. For example:

I was looking around for inspiration and asking peers for their input. However, everything that was suggested to me was already a real record company. For example:

Each of these labels have one artist signed to them.

Today was the 2015 Solar Eclipse so I was inspired by this and thought about naming me record label after the event. Unfortunately, both 'Solar' and 'Eclipse' are already record companies.

So I gave up on this and decided to think about the names of songs by Artists that I have been inspired by. I thought of Halcyon as this is the name of Ellie Goulding's latest album. However, I Googled the definition of Halcyon and found that it wouldn't really work well with an album that works with DJ's and dance music producers.

Then I tried Spectrum Records named after the song by Florence and The Machine and it was available.

Dance Music and the Use of Shapes

Dance Music and the Use of Shapes

More than often imagery layered with different shapes above are used within dance music. Maybe is comes from the saying 'throwing shapes' when referring to dancing I'm not sure. I have incorporated this idea of using shapes over my imagery on my Digipak to keep in line with codes and conventions of the dance music genre which I have tapped into. Triangles are regularly used for example in the typography of Calvin Harris and many others:

This inspired the use of a triangle on the cover of my Digipak.

A video was released a few days ago by Zedd who has been particularly influential to me during this project as he creates dance music along side young female singers. This song is called 'I Want You To Know' and it features Selena Gomez. Throughout the music video different shapes have been edited in over the top of the footage and it gives a really interesting effect which is similar to some of the experiments I did with my Digipak.

I really like the way this video was edited including the use of shapes similar to a kaleidoscope. It's fast paced and fun which is just what you need for a dance music video.

Colour Scheme - Digipak and Advert

Colour Scheme - Digipak and Advert

Having taken a variety of different photos to use in my Digipak, narrowing those image down to six has been quite a difficult decision. When adding in a few different images I edited with the Fragment App to apply different shapes to each image before adding it to my Digipak template.

.

I have decided no longer use  the images on the left hand-side of the Digipak and go with a blue colour scheme as I thought this gave a more 'cinematic'/ professional look to the Digipak. Blue connotes power and that's what female artists set out to represent and to inspire young girls - who are the primary target audiences.

For this I took new photographs of Charlotte aka Keira  Black to create this feel to the Digipak. Here is how it looks now:

Finishing Touches - Colour Correction

Finishing Touches - Colour Correction

As I am coming towards the end of the editing process of my music video I have been experimenting with the treatment of the footage to make it more cinematic. Until today I everything I tried made the footage look worse rather than better. However today I used the colour fix effect on Adobe Premier Pro and added an orange tint to the footage. I believe it works well to improve the look of the footage and next lesson I will get the opinion of my classmates and Mr. Earl.

Digipak Experiments

Digipak Experiments

I am continuing the design process for my Digipak. Today I took images for the extra sleeve or the back cover as I am still undecided. Here are the images I contemplated using:

Here are the edits I created using the Fragment App:

I decided to go with the following design as to be part of my Digipak:

I chose this design as I thought it had a professional feel to it. The pink background connotes romance, love and friendship I want to incorporate this into my Digipak as many artists similar to 'Keira Black' also use these topics when writing and singing their songs. I kept the theme of the different shapes for each sleeve and continued the blurred background and the 3D glasses effect to connote and emphasise 'Clarity' - the title of the Digipak.

Fixing/Hiding Bad Footage - Editing

Fixing/Hiding Bad Footage - Editing

As I mentioned in a previous post a few weeks ago I headed off to a shoot at the beach non the wiser that I had left the battery for the camera in the charger at home. I then had to think on my feet and decided to pull out my phone and film my shots that way. I knew that the quality produced by the camera on my phone would be no where near the quality I'd achieve from the Cannon. I was worried that this would be so obvious when it came to editing my footage together. So when got to lesson today I was worried that it would be so bad that I would have to cut the footage out all together. The footage was very pixelated when scaled up. There is only one camera setting on iPhones so the quality could not have been improved. So sir suggested that I added an effect to the footage called 'lens' which adds a sun beam to the footage. When edited in the middle of my fast paced section of the song and used the effect you could not tell that the quality was not as good as the other footage.

Putting My Digipak Together

Putting My Digipak Together

I have began putting my Digipak together by placing the edits I have created to feature in my Digipak. Here is how the template looks so far:
